Underpinning is a method of stabilising walls and foundations without the need to demolish the existing structure. Also to create extra living space by excavating down below existing foundations.

LAKE DISTRICT CASE STUDY
We excavated within the existing single storey barn to create two floors as the roof height could not be lifted due to planning restrictions. The thick stone walls of the barn had to be substantially underpinned and also the retaining garden wall which supported the neighbouring property and their garden at a higher level.
